Microphone Moto X

Post by huckle » Wed Aug 19, 2015 10:18 am

Hello all,
I installed the Demo version of DraStic to see whether it's working properly on my Moto X (2nd. gen).
I tried "Brain Age" and the emulation is near perfect - the best that I have ever seen! Kudos to the programmers!

However, it seems that I can't turn on my microphone. The button to turn it on or off does not respond. There is one brain exercise where you have to tell colors of words, and it's not registering anything.

Other apps (like Moto Voice, or Google Voice) are working on my phone, so I am not sure what's going on. I don't have any other DS ROMs that use a mic function, so I can't say for sure whether this is an issue with Brain Age or with the Moto X.

Any suggestions appreciated - eager to buy this, as it is hands down the best DS emulator I have ever seen!

There is no button to turn the microphone on/off. The button in the radial menu will simulate noise to the game while it's pressed, so you can get past many parts in games, that need you to blow into the mic.
The device's microphone is always enabled, as long as you don't deactivate it in the audio settings.
If it doesn't register in the game, try to change the 'mic level' setting.
You can also try to lower the volume in the audio settings, so the game's sound can't feed back into the mic.

Thanks Lordus for explaining what the mic button does.

I used headphones to eliminate any background noise and turned the mic to high sensitivity setting.
It's still not picking it up. When I use the "simulate noise" button, it registers sounds, but for Brain Age in particular, this is not going to work, as it expects the name of colors.

It might be just an issue for Brain Age then.

Thanks!

There is a homebrew test app, where you can record audio after pressing 'A', which then plays back after pressing 'A' another time: http://www.drastic-ds.com/micrecord.nds.
Can you try that, to see if it records normally?
Also, can you attach a savestate, from which i can easily get to that part of the game?
The savestates are stored in /sdcard/DraStic/savestates.

You did notice he is using the demo version to test..... so no savestate functionality.

Thanks for the mic test .nds.

I tried it and it picks up my voice very, very faint. I basically need to be really close to the speaker, speak quite load, and what it repeats to me is a very noisy and low reproduction. When I record the simulated mic noise (the mic button), it's much louder.

I realized that there are other ways to test the mic of the Moto X, and I tried two things. First, the google now voice recognition. That seems to work just fine. Google Voice Search understands me quite well. Then I also tried the Skype test call, with more mixed results. Basically I called the Skype Test Call, put myself on speaker phone, and had it play back to me. My voice was again faint, but without the noisy artifacts that I got from the mic test on DrasticDS.

Sorry won't be able to send a savestate, but if you play Brain Age, it's right when you ask to test your brain age at the beginning of the game.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions so far - very helpful community!

This could have to do with the DS's microphone (and consequently, DraStic's emulation) being pretty low resolution, meaning that quieter sounds will sound noisier.

Tried finding similar issues and I wonder if this is related:

Do you have headphones you can test with?

Very interesting results!

Using headphones completely fixed the Skype issue of the mic being too low (thanks for inadvertently fixing this for me as well and providing this link), it also seemed to have improved the DrasticDS app picking up my voice. It is still quite faint, even with mic setting to very high, but it's definitely picking up much more. Brain Age is now playable, even though it still has sometimes trouble hearing me. The fact however that it is indeed hearing me sometimes, is great progress. I still don't make it through a whole session, but get the Brain Age screen telling me that the mic can't pick me up.

It's been many, many years since I played this on my original DS Lite, but I think the voice recognition in Brain Age was not perfect back then, so what it is doing now through the emulator seems somewhat faithful.

Many thanks for the help!
