virtual buttons dont work

Installed the demo version to play pokemon black . the rom loads up fine and runs flawlessly. But i can't get past the"press start"screen. Tried every button one by one.Even the menu button doesn't bring up the menu. After that I tried 7 different roms. all load up fine but cant get past the press start screen on any of the games.no buttons work .i activated haptic feedback on so i could know whether any button press was actually getting registered.turns out that no button press was being registered.but when i map start to the volume keys of my phone it works.and i can see the start button being pressed when i press the volume key. I am using a nexus 5.
