Stylus

Post by Nav27 » Sat Jun 27, 2015 11:30 am

Hey guys.
I want to play The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on a nexus 7 2013 but i lack a Stylus.
What stylus would you recommend for games like Phantom Hourglass and Kirby canvas?

Your finger.
Sorry, phones have different types of touchscreens than DS ones.

Phones and tablets typically have capacitive touchscreens, which are designed for fingers and are cheaper too.
DSes (as well as pretty much any touchscreen on a Nintendo device) use resistive touchscreens, which are more touch-sensitive than capacitive touchscreens, and can utilize styluses.

You can also find me on Reddit (u/Ericbazinga) and Discord (in the DraStic Discord server). You'll find me in those places almost daily and here almost never.

actually, resistive screens are more known for pin point accuracy with the weakness of usually limited to one touch (although i could be wrong looking at my wacom). its not necessarily more touch sensitive as capacitive is usually the more sensitive (as it detects electrical impulses rather than resistive's way of detecting by pressure). no comment on how expensive both is tho...

The nexus 7 (2013) has a capacitive touch screen like has been mentioned.

To use a stylus on amscreen like yours it has to basically follow these 4 rules. There are styluses that do work on your type of screen (how well they work and how usefull they are is up for debate). In reality though a stylus on a capacitive screen is more so you don't get fingerprints or worse Doritos nacho cheese gunk on your screen, and not for improving accuracy.

1. A conductive surface: It must be able conduct an electrical charge between your hand and the screen. If the material is too resistive or if the distance between your hand and the screen is too great, the signal reaching the screen may be too weak to be detected.

2. At least 1/4 inch wide: When filtering data, the processor ignores areas that are significantly smaller than a human finger tip. This helps avoid unintentional activation. Having a stylus that is about 1/4 inch wide will ensure that there is enough surface area to be detected.

3. A relatively flat end: Having a flat tip ensures that the whole face can get close enough to the screen to be detected.

4. A smooth surface: This will ensure that you don't scratch up your screen.

If you want a better solution you will need something like the Samsung note series which uses a built in wacom digitizer to allow the s-pen to track properly. Or you could buy a really really bad Coby or other cheep android tablet that uses resistive touch technology and use an actual ds stylus if you can get DraStic to even run on one of those.
