Can you not remove buttons from the onscreen?

So I've figured out how to move buttons around but can I not remove some? For example I'm playing HeartGold and basically I only need the D-Pad, the rest are useless for this game so I don't need them on screen. I've flicked the switch over as you can see but that doesn't remove them, so I assume that isn't its purpose.

Try applying and then saving the layout for that game, and those buttons should be gone.
