im unable to download a yugioh 5d game, or pokemon heartgold, or even lego star wars 2. Ive tried from all the big rom download sites. Is it my drastic that's the issue? or must I dump old games to make way for new ones?

You shouldn't be asking advices on downloading roms. And if you have the massive NDS file and it still won't work, it's an issue with your phone most likely, since roms don't come out corrupted like that unless the source is really obscure.

turns out they downloaded properly, but they only appear in the database of the (much slower) nds4droid

you need to navigate the app to where your games folder is (its easy). also, keep in mind that DraStic only supports zip and nds files. it will not show 7zip and rar files
