Hotel Dusk/Wish Room Slowdown & "Ghosting?"

Post by Raulsen » Sun Jan 17, 2016 4:28 pm

Hey all,

So, I've been trying out the Drastic demo on my Kindle Fire (2015) after sideloading the Google Play Store, and so far, I've been absolutely floored by how well it's run just about everything I've thrown at it. Still, there IS one problem I've had, and I can't figure it out. If I could get it straightened out, this would be an insta-purchase, but I want to make sure I'll be able to play the game first.

So, while a bunch of other 3D games perform great without any problem at all (including Super Mario 64 DS and even Last Window, the game's sequel), Hotel Dusk slows down a decent chunk (at least enough to be noticeable) whenever I rotate my viewpoint in game. What's more whenever I finish examining an object, I get a weird sort of "ghosting" image (pictured in the link below) that lingers for a second or two.

I can live with the ghosting if need be, but the slowdown is just jarring enough to make me wonder, especially when so many games that are far more graphic-intensive perform without a hiccup. I've tried adjusting just about every setting I could, but the results were either negligible or just made things worse.

Would anyone know any way to remedy this, or would this be something that might have to be addressed by an update? I realize the Fire's underpowered compared to actual "modern" devices, but given the luck I've had with other titles, it doesn't seem to be a lack of power that's the problem.

Thanks a ton!

EDIT: Now with the picture actually linked! Woops.

So what are your settings? Hotel dusk works perfectly in my device using the drastic full version, maybe a bad dump of the game? Try another one.

Hotel Dusk is a little harder for some devices to run since it requires multi threaded 3d rendering option to be off or it flips the screens and can do some other odd visual glitches. The multi threaded option is a major speed boost especially on slower devices.

If you have high rez 3d option on ---- turn it off. This option causes a major performance hit. Aside from that I barely droped down into the low 90s or maybe high 80s even when purposely spinning fast enough to give myself a headache looking at the screen.

Thanks for the replies you two!

I've been using the default settings on the demo, although I've tried fiddling with everything else at some point or another. It's worked perfectly on everything else, so I'm just a little bit puzzled as to why HD is proving a bit of a challenge. This is going to sound like a noob question, but is it possible for some titles to simply have a bit more slowdown than others, regardless of their graphics? Like I mentioned earlier, Last Window worked perfectly for me on default settings, so I'm just curious. I mean, it's nothing major with Hotel Dusk, just enough for me to notice, but if I could get it running perfectly, I'd be pretty happy.

Maybe it's that there's some other sort of difference (aside from price and saves) between the demo and the paid version? Have you either of you used any special settings for the game?

Thanks so much!

Yes, very much so. There are many factors to DS emulation and the game can be doing things that's taking a lot of time to emulate without it being obvious that it would.

There isn't a difference between the demo and full version though (except that the demo is a slightly older version), so the demo should be a very reliably predictor of performance for the full version.
