I haven't played the game myself, but from what I can tell from the FAQ (http://www.gamefaqs.com/ds/925581-harvest-moon-ds/faqs/44866) it seems the sprites are something you unlock throughout the game (hence the casino). Can you comment on this more?

Exact same thing happened when I tried it in DesMuME just now (which I'm pretty confident doesn't have problems with the games). Maybe it's this?
